Stiftet Gandersheim blev grundlagt i 852 af den saksiske grev Liudolf, stamfaderen og navngiveren til Liudolfingerne. Til dette projekt modtog han på en pilgrimsrejse til Rom godkendelse fra pave Sergius II samt de nødvendige relikvier af de hellige paver Anastasius og Innocentius til grundlæggelsen. Klostersamfundet blev indtil færdiggørelsen af klosterbygningerne og stiftskirken først placeret i klosteret Brunshausen.
Stiftet Gandersheim var af sin karakter et prinseligt familiestift og nåede, efter sin grundlæggelse rigt udstyret, snart sin blomstring.
