Kleinlichtenhain var en del af kommunen Lichtenhain ved Gräfenthal i Kreis Neuhaus am Rennweg, Bezirk Suhl, Den Tyske Demokratiske Republik, bestående af tidligere tre beboede bygninger. Det grænsede direkte op til den i Forbundsrepublikken Tyskland beliggende kommune Kleintettau, Landkreis Kronach, Oberfranken. I det delte Tyskland fik stedet en usædvanlig behandling på grund af sin beliggenhed.
Området omkring Kleinlichtenhain ligger i den sydlige del af Thüringen i Landkreis Saalfeld-Rudolstadt og strækker sig som et bælte på cirka 100 meters bredde og knap en kilometer længde ind i bayersk område. På den bayerske side grænser det op til den del af Kleintettau i markedet Tettau i Landkreis Kronach, Oberfranken. Siden 1976 har en del af den tidligere by Kleinlichtenhain tilhørt Kleintettau. Området ligger direkte syd for Rennsteig.
