Den 6. oktober 105 f.Kr. blev en romersk hær, der skulle beskytte Sydgalien, knusende besejret i slaget ved Arausio, det nuværende Orange i Provence, af kimbrerne og teutonerne. De vandrende folk af teutonerne, kimbrerne og ambronerne under ledelse af kong Boiorix trak ned ad Rhonedalen mod syd til Arausio. Her blev de stillet over for to hære, der var under kommando af prokonsulen Quintus Servilius Caepio og konsulen Gnaeus Mallius Maximus. De to var kommet med deres herre med den hensigt at beskytte den romerske provins Gallia ulterior mod invasion og forhindre en fremrykning af fjenderne mod Italien.
