Byen er opstået ved sammenløbet af vandløbene Stura og Gesso, på en "kile" hvis karakteristiske form har inspireret navnet.
Den ældste kerne, og det historiske centrum, er præget af et skakbrætsdesign, der starter fra spidsen af den imaginære kile og løber langs en medianvej, der munder ud i det store Galimberti-plads: byen blev faktisk formet som en ant-fransk militær fæstning af Savoyerne, og det er en af de få hovedstæder i Norditalien med moderne og ikke romerske rødder.
