Hertugdømmet Urbino blev efter døden af den sidste hertug Francesco Maria II. della Rovere i 1625 knyttet som provins til Kirkestaten. Som følge heraf var Palazzo Ducale i Pesaro i 1655 residens for kardinallegaten Luigi Homodei. Han modtog dronning Christina af Sverige under hendes rejse til Rom. I dag bruges paladset som hovedrådhus.
