Siden 2011 har festivalet været afholdt på begivenhedsområdet i Biddinghuizen ved siden af Walibi Holland i Flevoland. Fra 2003 til 2010 fandt festivalet sted på Almeerderstrand. Siden 2011 oprettes der hvert år en campingplads ved siden af festivalområdet. Festivalen organiseres af Q-dance. Navnet Defqon.1 kommer fra den amerikanske militærbetegnelse DEFCON, hvor DEFCON 1 er den højeste beredskabstilstand. I Nederlandene er det sammenligneligt med GRIP Rijk.
