På Prinsegracht, som blev gravet i 1640, blev Boterhus bygget i 1650 af byarkitekt Bartholomeus van Bassen. Det blev hurtigt for lille, så i 1681 blev den store Boterwaag bygget ved siden af Boterhus, som udelukkende var bestemt til engroshandel. Her blev der handlet med smør og ost indtil kl. 13. Om sommeren begyndte man allerede kl. 7, om vinteren først kl. 8. De private gik til det lille smørhus. Over den venstre port står årstallet 1650. Bag hegnet ligger Boterstrædet med nogle huse. Over døren til venstre for porten er byvåbenet for Haag, storken.
