Gartnerierhvervet i væksthuse danner en stor kontrast til det naturlige miljø, du vandrer i, omkring Bovenkarspel. Herfra har du et godt udsyn fra kanten af Streekbos. Meget har ændret sig her gennem årene, for inden den store jordfordeling i 1978 var skoven også landbrugsjord. Her følger et lille stykke historie om gartnerierhvervet i væksthuse. I slutningen af 1800-tallet sejlede lokale gartnere stadig i træpramme gennem smalle vestfrisiske kanaler til den historiske Vaarveiling for at levere grøntsager og blomsterløg. Prammene lagde til bag stationen, hvor høsten blev læsset på toget. Omkring 1970 aftog denne transportform, da lastbilerne blev taget i brug. I dag eksporteres millioner af tulipaner, dyrket i væksthuse, herfra til hele verden.
