Pieterpad blev opfundet, gået og beskrevet mellem 1978 og 1983 af Toos Goorhuis-Tjalsma fra Tilburg og Bertje Jens fra Groningen. To veninder, der mente, at Nederland virkelig kunne bruge en seriøs lang distance rute. De blev inspireret af en vandretur i den tyske Schwarzwald og ønskede at skabe noget lignende i Nederland.
