Der Mondsee, im oberösterreichischen Salzkammergut südwestlich des Attersees gelegen, gehört mit seiner gesamten Fläche zur gleichnamigen Gemeinde. Das Südufer bildet die Grenze zwischen Oberösterreich und dem Land Salzburg sowie zwischen den Kalkalpen im Süden und der Sandsteinzone. Markant ist auch die Drachenwand am Südwestufer. 1864 wurden Reste von Pfahlbauten der jungsteinzeitlichen Mondseekultur entdeckt.
