Die Triester Straße ist, historisch gesehen, die wichtigste Straßenverbindung Wiens nach Süden. Sie ist Teil der ehemaligen Bundesstraße B17. Ihre Funktion als Fernverkehrsstraße wurde seit den 1960er Jahren großteils von der Südautobahn A2 übernommen, zu der sie heute u. a. als Zubringer dient. Die bis heute sehr hohe Verkehrsfrequenz der Triester Straße beruht auf dem in den 1960er Jahren begonnenen Ausbau des Speckgürtels südlich von Wien .
