Der Kraenepoel, ein 22 ha großer Teich mit umliegenden Wäldern, ist der letzte von den Dutzenden Feldteichen, mit denen im Mittelalter das Bulskampveld, das ausgedehnte Heidefeld von Aalter bis Brügge, übersät war. Er entstand ab dem 13. Jahrhundert, als die Bewohner Feldsteine ausgruben oder Torf stachen. Die verbliebenen Gruben dienten der Fischzucht. Der Name „Kraenepoel“ verweist noch auf die alte niederländische Bezeichnung für Torf: kraene oder krane. Er ist als Naturschutzgebiet im Rahmen von Natura 2000 geschützt. Während strenger Frostperioden friert der Kraenepoel manchmal teilweise oder vollständig zu, und durch seine geringe Tiefe ist dies oft der erste Teich, auf dem Schlittschuh gefahren wird.
