Auf dem Coudenberg stand einst der Coudenbergpalast, eines der prestigeträchtigsten Gebäude Europas. Hier tagte der Orden vom Goldenen Vlies. Philipp der Gute gab den Anstoß zum Bau eines imposanten Palastes im 15. Jahrhundert. Von hier aus wollte er das gesamte Reich der Niederlande verwalten. Albrecht Dürer erklärte, dass er nirgendwo einen solchen Prunk und Reichtum gesehen hatte. Im Februar 1731 wurde er durch ein Feuer zerstört, die Ruinen des Palastes werden mehr als 40 Jahre später abgerissen. Es ist jetzt die wichtigste archäologische Stätte von Brüssel. An der Stelle, an der früher die Kapelle stand, befindet sich jetzt das "BELvue Museum", ein Museum über die Geschichte Belgiens.
