Am 13. Mai 1847 stellte der Stadtarchitekt François Drossaert ein Entwurfsdossier für den Bau eines neuen Gefängnisses hinter dem Polizeirevier am Großen Markt zusammen. Am 1. Oktober 1848 wurde das Gebäude in Betrieb genommen. Bis 1862 wurden hier tatsächlich die Polizeistrafen verbüßt. Nach der Restaurierung im Jahr 1978 wurde es als Museum eingerichtet.
Nach 20 Jahren wurde das Museum renoviert und umfangreich erweitert. Dabei wurde nicht nur der Ausstellungsraum verdoppelt, sondern es wurde auch ausreichend Platz geschaffen, um die Museumsstücke unter optimalen Bedingungen zu lagern.
