Aywaille ist bekannt für das von den Mönchen von Cluny, die im Jahre 1088 dort ankamen, gegründete Priorat. Auch Jesuiten haben hier gelebt. Alle Gebäude wurden 1785 säkularisiert und verkauft. Ein Teil der alten Kirche diente als Grund für den Bau der heutigen Kirche mit Steinen aus der Gegend. 1960 wurde die neue Kirche eingeweiht.
Außen, links vom Portal, befindet sich eine Skulptur aus Stein, die die Kreuzigung darstellt. Das Innere beeindruckt durch Frische und Helligkeit. Eine schöne Statue aus Holz, die den Heiligen Petrus, den Patron der Kirche, darstellt, kann dort bewundert werden.
Eine Anekdote: Der im Jahre 1254 neu gewählte Prior von Aywaille hieß Thibauld Visconti und stammte aus Piacenza in Italien. Ein theologischer Gelehrter, der so bekannt war, dass er im Jahre 1271 zum Papst gewählt wurde. Er erhielt den Namen Gregor X.
So kann Aywaille sich rühmen, der Kirche zu einem Papst verholfen zu haben.
