Im Het Leen stehen Laub- und Nadelbäume kreuz und quer durcheinander, so scheint es. Das war früher anders. Im Meetjesland wurde früher vor allem Nadelwald gepflanzt, um das Holz für den Bergbau im Süden Belgiens zu verwenden. Danach wurde wieder auf Laubwald umgeschwenkt. Deshalb bestehen Het Leen und viele andere Waldgebiete im Meetjesland oft aus einem Flickenteppich dieser verschiedenen Bewaldung.

Het Leen ist ursprünglich ein nasses, mooriges Gebiet. Dennoch stehen wir hier nicht mit unseren Füßen im Wasser. Dafür stehen die Bäume hier natürlich größtenteils dazwischen. Sie benötigen auch viel Wasser zum Wachsen und ziehen so das Erdreich trocken.
