Description

Derzeitige freie gemischte Grundschule St. Franziskus, zurückgehend auf die 1880 gegründete katholische Volksschule für Mädchen des Stadtteils Sombeke. Zuvor wurde bereits Unterricht von den Ordensleuten des Heiligen Joseph von Elversele erteilt, die von den Schwestern Maricolen von Waasmunster übernommen wurden (seit 1968 Maria-Schwestern von Franziskus). Links angrenzend an Sombekedries errichteten die Schwestern 1890 neben der Volksschule für Mädchen ein Kloster mit einem Heim für verlassene Kinder, Waisen, Alte und Kostgänger, das in der Zeit von 1914-1918 in das St. Joseph-Pensionat mit Sekundarschulausbildung umgewandelt wurde. Dieses prägende neogotische Ensemble, entworfen von dem Baumeister Modest De Noyette, ist jedoch mittlerweile abgerissen worden.
