Der Name Waterland ist einfach zu erklären, aber der von Oudeman ist weniger offensichtlich. Der Begriff hat nichts mit einem älteren Mann zu tun, sondern steht für 'verlassenes Gebiet'. Der ursprüngliche Name dieses Dorfes ist mindestens ebenso schön wie der aktuelle und verweist auf ihren Schutzpatron: Sint-Niclaes-ter-Varent.
