Ath liegt an der Dender. Die Stadt wurde mehrmals befestigt, unter anderem von Karl V. und Vauban. Sehenswürdigkeiten sind die Burbanburg, die St. Julien-Kirche, die St. Maarten-Kirche und das Rathaus. In Ath wurde am 4. Juni 1357 Frieden zwischen dem flämischen Grafen Ludwig von Male und seiner Frau Margarete von Male mit dem luxemburgischen Herzog Wenzel geschlossen. Dadurch fand der Brabantische Erbfolgekrieg ein Ende, und Flandern erwarb Mechelen und Antwerpen.
