Die Zavel ist ein Stadtteil im historischen Herzen von Brüssel, am Rand der Befestigungen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert.
Sehr wahrscheinlich wurde hier in der Vergangenheit Sand gewonnen. 1304 verkaufte das Sint-Jansgasthuis dieses Gelände an die Zunft der Armbrustschützen, die hier eine Kirche errichteten. Zuvor hatte der Ort dazu gedient, die Toten des Krankenhauses zu begraben. Die Kirche Unserer Lieben Frau zur Zavel fällt durch ihre 14 m hohen Glasfenster auf; die Mittel zum Bau eines Turms fehlten.
