Jahrelang spielte der Bahnhof As eine zentrale Rolle im Steinkohleabbau in dieser Region, denn von hier aus fuhren die vielen Bergleute und Kohlezüge zu den nahegelegenen Bergwerken in Eisden, Waterschei und Winterslag. Bis 2017 wurde nördlich und südlich der Kohlenbahn Bergkies gewonnen. Danach wurde das Gebiet vom Umstrukturierungsausschuss (jetzt Kiesausschuss) landschaftlich neu gestaltet, bevor es der Natur zurückgegeben wurde. Das Gebiet ist nach dem nahegelegenen Findling benannt, der die Grenze zwischen den ehemaligen Gemeinden Lanklaar, Niel-bij-As und Mechelen-aan-de-Maas markiert.
