Unterwalden ist der Name des Gebietes, das aus den beiden Schweizer Kantonen Nidwalden und Obwalden besteht. In der Alten Eidgenossenschaft war Unterwalden neben Appenzell einer der beiden «Orte mit geteilter Standesstimme».
Vor allem in älteren offiziellen Dokumenten findet man für diese heutigen Kantone mit halber Standesstimme und nur einem Ständerat die Bezeichnungen «Unterwalden ob dem Wald» respektive «Unterwalden nid dem Wald». So trug die heute noch gültige Kantonsverfassung Obwaldens von 1968 ursprünglich den Namen «Verfassung des Kantons Unterwalden ob dem Wald» , sie wurde jedoch 2007 in «Verfassung des Kantons Obwalden» umbenannt. Nidwalden vollzog den entsprechenden Schritt 2010. Auf Bundesebene wurde der Begriff «Unterwalden» schon mit der neuen Bundesverfassung von 1999 aufgegeben.
