Neustrelitz ist eine Mittelstadt im Landkreis Mecklenburgische Seenplatte im Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern im Nordosten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die frühere Residenzstadt mecklenburgischer Herzöge und einstige Landeshauptstadt von Mecklenburg-Strelitz ist heute eines der 18 Mittelzentren des Landes. Sie liegt knapp 30 km südlich des Oberzentrums Neubrandenburg.
Neustrelitz wurde 1733 als barocke Planstadt nahe der Stadt Strelitz gegründet, nachdem das Strelitzer Wasserschloss des regierenden Herzogs Adolf Friedrich III. 1712 abgebrannt war. Dieser bezog daraufhin 1731 sein im ehemaligen Ort Glienecke neu erbautes Residenzschloss Neustrelitz. Es folgte der Bau einer Siedlung nach den Plänen von Hofbaumeister Julius Löwe für Hofstaat und Landesverwaltung sowie am 20. Mai 1733 ein Aufruf des Herzogs zur Ansiedlung von Neubürgern. Dieses Schriftstück gilt heute als Gründungsurkunde der Stadt Neustrelitz. Der historische Stadtkern mit vielen Baudenkmalen ist weitgehend erhalten.
