Hallenberg ist eine Landstadt am Rothaargebirge und gehört zum Hochsauerlandkreis in Nordrhein-Westfalen . Sie ist die – an der Einwohnerzahl gemessen – kleinste westfälische Gemeinde sowie nach Heimbach die zweitkleinste Stadt des Bundeslands Nordrhein-Westfalen. Hallenberg wurde vom Kölner Erzbischof Konrad von Hochstaden als Grenzfestung gegründet und war bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert eine Ackerbürgerstadt. Dies änderte sich erst in jüngster Zeit mit der Ansiedlung von gewerblichen Betrieben und dem Aufschwung des Tourismus.
