Stadtlengsfeld liegt im Tal der Felda, einem Nebenfluss der Werra in der Rhön. Der 714 Meter hohe Vulkankegel Baier liegt etwa vier Kilometer südöstlich der Stadt.
Vermutlich entstand der Name durch die Verbindung des mittelhochdeutschen Wortes „langes, lenges“ und dem althochdeutschen „fèld“ . Eine Deutung des Namens nach „entlang der Felda, längs der Felda“ erscheint angesichts der Lage von Kaltenlengsfeld oder Schenklengsfeld fraglich, da beide Orte nicht an dem Fluss Felda liegen.
