Oberkochen liegt zwischen Albuch im Westen und Norden und Härtsfeld im Osten in und über den Tälern des Schwarzen Kochers und des dort in ihn mündenden Gutenbachs. Der höchste Punkt der Markung befindet sich auf dem Gipfel des Volkmarsbergs .
Wenig südwestlich der Stadt liegt auf 499,2 m ü. NHN der Ursprung des Schwarzen Kochers. Von dieser kräftigen Karstquelle aus durchfließt der Kocher das Stadtgebiet in nordöstlicher Richtung und hat dort folgende Zuflüsse:
