Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts lebte Ludwig van Beethoven in Wien, aber 1809 gab er vor, nach Kassel zu kommen, um Kapellmeister zu werden. Er wollte in Wien bleiben, aber dann musste der Adel ihm ein sicheres Einkommen garantieren. Sein Bluff hatte Erfolg. Am 26. Februar erhielt er den Vertrag, den er wollte, mit einer jährlichen Vergütung von 4000 Florinen.
