Der Ingolstädter Hauptbahnhof ist neben dem Bahnhof Ingolstadt Nord einer von zwei betrieblich genutzten Personenbahnhöfen Ingolstadts. Er wird vom Bahnhofsmanagement Rosenheim der DB Station&Service AG verwaltet.
Mit dem zunehmenden Wirtschafts- und Bevölkerungswachstum in Ingolstadt wuchs in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts auch der Bedarf an einem schnellen Warentransport und an der schnellen Beförderung von Personen. Die Dampfschifffahrt auf der Donau konnte die Verkehrsprobleme jedoch nicht lösen, da sie sich wegen des Wasserstands und der Strömungsverhältnisse als schwierig erwies.
