Die Sorpetalsperre liegt im Hochsauerlandkreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen zwischen den Ortsteilen Langscheid und Amecke der Stadt Sundern. Rund 10 Kilometer südwestlich von Arnsberg staut sie das Wasser der Sorpe zum Sorpesee, dem tiefsten Stausee im Sauerland. Mit einem Damm von 69 Meter Höhe wird ein Gesamtstauraumvolumen von 70 Millionen Kubikmetern erzeugt. Die Talsperre im Norden des Naturparks Sauerland-Rothaargebirge gehört dem Ruhrverband mit Sitz in Essen, der insgesamt acht Talsperren im Sauerland betreibt. Ihr Hauptzweck ist die Stabilisierung und Erhöhung der Niedrigwasserführung der Ruhr. Ferner versorgt sie das Wasserwerk Langscheid mit Rohwasser.
