Payerbach liegt im Industrieviertel in Niederösterreich. Die Fläche der Marktgemeinde umfasst 17,68 Quadratkilometer. 55,54 Prozent der Fläche sind bewaldet.An der Grenze von Kalkalpen und Wiener Becken liegt Payerbach in der Grauwackenzone, welche in der Payerbacher Gegend ihre Ausläufer hat. Südlich befindet sich das Semmering-Mesozoikum, welches unter die Grauwackenzone eintaucht. Die geologischen Schichten werden im Norden von Payerbach von den nördlichen Kalkalpen überlagert. Diese Schichten setzen sich sowohl westlich als auch teilweise östlich von Payerbach fort.
