Die Vulkanwerft als Hamburger Tochterunternehmen der Stettiner Maschinenbau Actien-Gesellschaft Vulcan wurde 1909 eröffnet. 1930 übernahmen die Kieler Howaldtswerke den Betrieb. Die HDW verkauften 1986 ihr Hamburger Werk Ross an Blohm + Voss, die im Jahr darauf die Werft schlossen.
Der Betrieb wurde 1905 als Tochterunternehmen der Stettiner Maschinenbau Actien-Gesellschaft Vulcan unter dem Namen A.G. Vulcan Hamburg gegründet . Im Gegensatz zu der geologischen Bezeichnung Vulkan wird der Name der Werft auf der ersten Silbe betont . Er leitet sich ab von Vulcanus, dem römischen Gott des Feuers und der Schmiedekunst.
