Die Peene ist ein Küstenfluss in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Sie ist der siebtgrößte Meereszufluss mit Einzugsgebiet in Deutschland . Der Name stammt aus dem Slawischen: Pěna und bedeutet „Schaum“, bzw. „der schaumige “.
Die Peene entsteht aus mehreren Quellflüssen, die alle Peene im Namen tragen und sich teils vor dem, teils im Kummerower See vereinigen. Der Quellfluss ohne Zusatzbezeichnung ist weder der stärkste noch der längste noch der mittlere und deswegen nicht als Hauptquellfluss klassifiziert. Und die als Hauptquellfluss klassifizierte Westpeene liegt in der Talachse von Kummerower und Malchiner See, hat aber von allen den kürzesten Flussweg bis zur Mündung ins Meer.
