Die Sophienkirche war ein evangelischer Sakralbau unweit des Zwingers in Dresden. Sie entstand 1351 als Kirche des Franziskanerklosters und war zum Zeitpunkt ihres Abbruchs die einzige in ihrer Grundsubstanz erhaltene gotische Kirche der Stadt. Als von Beginn an zweischiffig erbaute Kirche mit zwei Chören gebührt ihr in der Architekturgeschichte eine Sonderstellung. Die Sophienkirche war bis 1918 die evangelische Hofkirche Dresdens und damit die Hauptkirche des lutherischen Königreichs Sachsen. Nach dem Ende der Monarchie war sie ab 1922 als Domkirche St. Sophien Sitz des sächsischen Landesbischofs.
Die Sophienkirche hatte den frühesten bildhauerischen Schmuck, der im Raum Dresden nachgewiesen ist. Zwei Büsten auf Konsolen sind zudem die ersten überlieferten bildlichen Darstellungen Dresdner Bürger.
