Der Militärbezirk III war die im Südteil des DDR-Territoriums geschaffene, militäradministrative territoriale Vereinigung von Verbänden, Truppenteilen, Einheiten und militärischen Einrichtungen verschiedener Waffengattungen, Spezialtruppen und Dienste der Landstreitkräfte der NVA sowie des Ersatzwesens der NVA. Aus diesen Formationen wurden im Mobilmachungsfall die 3. Armee und der Territoriale Militärbezirk III gebildet.
Das Führungsorgan befand sich am Standort Leipzig unter der Bezeichnung Kommando Militärbezirk III und umfasste die Feldführung der 3. Armee und die Führung des Territorialen Militärbezirks.
