Der kommunale Begriff liegt rechts des Flusses Fluvià. Es gibt einen flachen Sektor entlang des Flusses und der Rest ist von den Bergen umgeben, die das Ende der fluvialen Ebene von Alt Empordà markieren. Im Jahr 2005 hatte es 115 eingetragene Einwohner. Es ist um die Pfarrkirche gruppiert und bewahrt Überreste des mittelalterlichen Stadtgebietes. Es bildet einen kleinen denkmalgeschützten Komplex, außerhalb dessen sich mehrere Bauernhöfe befinden. Die Hauptwirtschaft basiert auf Landwirtschaft, Viehzucht und der Holzindustrie. Vilaür ist ein Toponym, das als aus dem katalanischen Wort vila und einem germanischen Personennamen gebildet angesehen wird. Die Stadt feiert das Fest im Juli, am Tag des Heiligen Jakobus.
