Vichy ist als Kur- und Erholungsstadt bekannt. Es war auch die Hauptstadt von Vichy-Frankreich während der nationalsozialistischen deutschen Besatzung im Zweiten Weltkrieg von 1940 bis 1944. Vichy liegt am Ufer des Flusses Allier. Die Quelle des Allier liegt im nahegelegenen Massif Central, das nur wenige Kilometer südlich, in der Nähe der Hauptstadt der Region, Clermont-Ferrand, liegt. Starke Schneefälle im Massif Central machen oft Straßen unpassierbar, aber Vichy liegt mit etwa 260 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel tief genug, dass das Klima kontinentaler ist.
