Die Hekla ist ein 1491 m hoher Vulkan im Süden Islands, auf dem Gemeindegebiet von Rangárþing ytra. Die Hekla ist der Zentralvulkan einer 40 km langen Vulkanspalte und mindestens 6600 Jahre alt.
Der Berg gehört zu den drei aktivsten Vulkanen Islands. Die beachtlichen Eruptionen des Vulkans haben immer wieder große Teile von Island mit vulkanischen Aschen und Bims bedeckt. Etwa zehn Prozent der Tephra, die in den letzten 1000 Jahren auf Island ausgestoßen wurde, stammt von der Hekla, das sind etwa fünf Kubikkilometer. Zusätzlich wurden während dieser Zeit etwa acht Kubikkilometer Lava freigesetzt.
Der Vulkan liegt nordöstlich der Gemeinde Hella und etwa 25 km westlich von Landmannalaugar im Hochland von Island. Die Entfernung nach Reykjavík beträgt 107 km.
