Einmal stand es im Bellamypark, jetzt prangt die Statue von Frans Naerebout - dem Urvater der Vlissingse Lotsen - an der Boulevard De Ruyter.
Naerebout (1748-1818) hatte als VOC-Lotse die Aufgabe, Schiffe sicher in und aus der Scheldemündung zu begleiten. Es war derselbe Frans Naerebout, der im Juli 1779 mehr als 80 Personen von einem sinkenden Ostindienfahrer, 'De Woestduyn', retten konnte. 1788 verlor ein anderes Schiff, die 'Zuiderburg', sein Steuer, während es auf dem Weg nach China war und 400 Mann an Bord hatte. Auch dieses Schiff drohte zu sinken und trieb sechs Tage lang zwischen den Eisfeldern umher. Wiederum gelang es Naerebout, dieses Schiff zu erreichen und es mit allerlei Tricks sicher nach Plymouth in England zu bringen. Zu Recht also ein Held aus Vlissingen...
