Das Flussgebiet umfasst die Einzugsgebiete von Rhein, Maas, Waal, IJssel und Vecht. Auf dem europäischen Kontinent gibt es nur wenige Orte, an denen so viel Wasser entlangfließt wie in diesem Gebiet. Mit diesem Wasser kommt auch viel Material, das im Wasser gelöst ist. Am Ende der letzten Eiszeiten, während der auch Massen von Schmelzwasser Material mit sich führten, erhielt man hier ein beeindruckendes Beispiel für verzweigte Flüsse, die sich ihren Weg durch ihre eigenen Ablagerungen suchten. Von diesem verzweigten Muster kann man noch Reste entlang der Maas bei Cuyk sehen.
