Am 1. Januar 1997 wurde die Gemeinde Steenbergen gegründet, aus der Fusion der Gemeinden Dinteloord und Prinsenland, Nieuw-Vossemeer und Steenbergen. Mit den bereits zu Steenbergen gehörenden Kirchdörfern Kruisland und De Heen umfasst die neue Gemeinde daher 5 Kerne. Jeder mit einem eigenen Charakter.
Die Gemeinde hat über 23.000 Einwohner und eine Fläche von ungefähr 16.000 ha. Eine ursprünglich agrarische Gemeinde mit in den Kernen Steenbergen und Dinteloord einem industriellen und Einzelhandelscharakter.
