Zuidhorn wurde im 18. Jahrhundert zum Schauplatz einer schrecklichen Verfolgung von Homosexualität oder Sodomie. Der damalige Grietman De Mepsche, eine Art Bürgermeister, verfolgte eine große Anzahl von Menschen aus der Umgebung und zwang sie durch Folter zu Geständnissen. Es wurden 22 Todesurteile ausgesprochen und durch Erhängen während einer öffentlichen Hinrichtung in Zuidhorn vollstreckt. Zwei Personen waren bereits durch Folter auf der Folterbank gestorben. Alle 22 Leichen wurden ehrenlos verbrannt anstatt beerdigt. Der jüngste erhängte Junge war erst fünfzehn. Zwei vierzehnjährige Jungen wurden als minderjährig betrachtet, aber dennoch für schuldig befunden; sie mussten die Hinrichtungen miterleben und verschwanden für den Rest ihres Lebens in Besserungsanstalten.
