Durch den Torfabbau im weitläufigen und tiefgelegenen Moorgebiet entstanden hier im 16. Jahrhundert die Langeraarse Plassen, bestehend aus drei durch Moordämme getrennten Seen: der Zuidplas (ca. 65 ha), der Noord- oder Oostplas (ca. 65 ha) und der Geerplas (ca. 35 ha). Die Moordämme (oder Moorufer) entstanden, weil die relativ schmalen Streifen, die als Wege genutzt wurden, nicht kultiviert wurden. Die Seen sind miteinander verbunden, obwohl im Moment aufgrund von Experimenten zur Verbesserung der Wasserqualität die Verbindung zwischen dem Noordplas und dem Geerpolder Plas unterbrochen ist.
