Das Selwerderdiepje ist der Abschnitt des Flusslaufs der Hunze zwischen der Stadt Groningen und Wierumerschouw. Außerdem war es möglicherweise ursprünglich der Name eines um 1400 gegrabenen Wasserwegs, der das Schuitendiep mit der Borgham verband, einer Mündung der Hunze, wo sich jetzt das Viertel De Hoogte befindet. Dieser Wasserweg verlief parallel zum Boterdiep und sorgte dafür, dass die nach der Stadt abgeleitete Hunze nördlich der Stadt in das ursprüngliche Flussbett floss.
