Der Hafen liegt im Nordwesten von Porto im Mündungstrichter des Flusses Leça auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Matosinhos und bedient die Stadt und die Großregion Porto, deren wichtigster Umschlagplatz er ist. Die Anlage wurde am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts errichtet und löste den veralteten Hafen am Fluss Douro ab, der südlich von Porto ins Meer fließt. Der immer wieder ausgebaute und erweiterte Hafen verfügt über 55 Hektar Landfläche und 120 Hektar Wasserfläche und liegt unmittelbar am Atlantik. Zufahrt und Hafenbecken sind unabhängig von der Tide zu erreichen. Der Hafen ist durch die Eisenbahn Linha de Leixões und mehrere Straßen angeschlossen.
