In der Schlacht von Princeton am 3. Januar 1777 während des Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges wurden britische und hessische Truppen unter Oberstleutnant Charles Mawhood in Princeton von amerikanischen Truppen der Kontinentalarmee unter General George Washington nach einem Überraschungsangriff geschlagen.
Nach dem Sieg in Trenton am frühen Morgen des 26. Dezember entschied General Washington, die Briten in New Jersey anzugreifen, bevor er mit seinen Truppen in die Winterquartiere zurückkehren würde. Am 30. Dezember überquerte er den Delaware River zurück nach New Jersey.
