A fantastic boating route from the rural village of Hitzum to the historic town of Franeker, highlight of the Eleven Cities Tour!

Take a photo as you pass under the Eleven Cities Bridge, check out the Geuzengat, and marvel at the imposing city walls. In the town of Franeker, there are several docking options, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely stroll or a break at a café terrace.

Duration of the trip
This route is a total of 12.6 km long. Beginning water rats paddle about 3 km per hour, so they need at least 4 hours for this route.

Bridges in Friesland
There are several bridges on this route. With a SUP board or canoe or kayak, almost all bridges can be easily passed. If there is ever a problem with a bridge or a culvert? Get off your board or out of the canoe and walk the distance. One thing should be obvious: it is forbidden to throw waste into the water. If you see waste in the water while you're out, please take it with you in your canoe or on your board. For the sake of nature!

Information on waterways
The majority of the route is a waterway of category DM. Such routes may be navigated by boats with a maximum draft of 1.3 m and a height of no more than 2.3 m. Therefore, this route is also suitable for trips with an (electric) sloop. But be careful! In the town center of Franeker, the canals are narrow and the bridges low, making them passable only with a small boat.
