The name Herrnau derives from the term for the floodplain of the noble lords and originally designated a part of the powerful floodplain forest edge between Hellbrunner Allee and Salzach. The word first appears in 1574 as “die Herrnau.”
In 1631, the former chamber servant Philip Vermeulen built Herrenhof Herrnau. The castle is referred to as a knight's fief. In 1685, the chamber servant Johann Jakob Perger became the owner, who called himself “von Pergrain” after being raised to the rank of nobility by Emperor Leopold I. From 1741 to 1744, the castle was transformed into its current shape by the chancellor Hieronymus Nikolaus Anton Christani von Rall. As chancellor to Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, Christani was the dogmatic mastermind and executor of the Protestant expulsion in 1731/32, gaining a rather infamous reputation across Europe. After him, the building was also referred to as Christianihof; his coat of arms is located above the entrance door. Later, the noble family von Quabeck were the owners of the estate. In 1805, Elector Ferdinand of Tuscany owned the castle, and from 1846, it was held by the Counts of Kuenburg. Today, it is owned by the Clary-Aldringen family.
