In the spring of 1909, Permeke returned to Latem, among his friends from Latem, but he lived there rather reclusively and was primarily interested in the heavy and paste-like touch of Albert Servaes, whom he had already known from his time at the academy in Ghent; they exchanged a lot, became friends, and painted together in the countryside in and around Latem. Servaes could already be considered the "Father of Flemish Expressionism" at that time.
