Pastor Segers and other pioneers laid the foundation for the Nature Point Museum by establishing the ornithological association ‘De Wielewaal’ in 1933. They possessed a collection of mounted birds, skins, and eggs. The skins, simply prepared hides and feathers, were used as educational material for presentations, among other things. The ever-growing collection found a home in 1961 in the house on Graatakker. This led to the official opening of the ‘Kempens Bird Museum’ on April 20, 1963.
The bird collection was exhibited in various cabinets, some even in a modern setup with a depiction of the corresponding biotope. In 1998, a renovation of the house and museum building of De Wielewaal became necessary. An asbestos problem arising from the renovation caused a significant part of the collection to be lost. A limited number of items and some of the skins could be salvaged. Fortunately, this loss was compensated in 2001 with the purchase of a unique collection of mounted birds and mammals from a private collector. A collection consisting of more than 1,000 pieces, which now forms the natural history collection of the Nature Point Museum.
This permanent offering is supplemented with changing exhibitions where one can get acquainted with carnivorous plants from other parts of the world and with the house sparrow from our area. Hands-on activities can be done in the education nature garden. A garden gate at the back provides a connection between the garden of the Nature Point Museum and Muylenberg. Enjoy these beautiful pieces of nature in the heart of the city.
