This monument is located next to the Sint-Petrus en Pauluskerk on the Sint-Petrus en Paulusplein in Ostend.
The memorial to the victims of the 1922 war by Pieter-Jan Braecke (1859-1938) was originally located in the square in front of the church. This monument was demolished in 1968. The bronze statue with the soldier was moved to 'De Plate' (Historical Museum in Ostend). The two high reliefs ("The Escape of the Ostend Fishermen 1914" and "The Liberation 1918") were first placed in the church square along the Vindictivelaan and then, in 2000, by August Michiels together with a new bust of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth , next to the church.
